Choosing a hedge trimmer
Blade length drives everything. Around 45–55cm suits domestic hedges and is easy to control one-handed at the end of a long session. 60–75cm covers longer runs and formal hedges. Longer bars are heavier — if you are working above shoulder height, weight matters more than reach.
Petrol, battery or pole
Battery trimmers are the sweet spot for most domestic hedges: light, quiet, instant start, and there is no cord to cut. Petrol still wins for long commercial runs and thick woody growth. A pole hedge trimmer is the safe answer for anything you would otherwise need a ladder for.
Blade care
Keep the blades clean and lightly oiled — sap is what gums them up and makes the machine work harder. Blunt or badly set blades tear rather than cut, which browns the hedge off. We sharpen and re-set blades in the workshop.
