Buying hand tools that last
The difference between a cheap pruning saw and a good one shows up in the first hour of work. Silky blades are hard-chromed and impulse-hardened, which holds an edge far longer than a pressed blade, and replacement blades are available so the handle outlives several blades.
Which saw for which job
Folding saws suit light pruning and are safe to carry. Fixed-blade straight saws cut faster and are better if you are working through a lot of material. Curved blades pull into the cut and suit overhead work; straight blades are more controllable at the bench. Pole saws extend reach without a ladder — worth it for anything above shoulder height.
Care
Clean sap off the blade after use, keep the pivot lubricated on folding saws, and replace the blade rather than fighting a blunt one. We stock replacement blades for the ranges we sell.
