Use the right oil

Your equipment is designed around the oil the manufacturer specifies. These are small two-stroke or four-stroke engines and they are not built to run on oil formulated for car engines. Many manufacturers will decline a warranty claim if the wrong oil has been used.

Two-stroke ratios

50:1 oils — the quality ones from Husqvarna, Shindaiwa, Echo and similar — are 100ml per 5 litres, or 20ml per litre. Cheaper 25:1 oils from hardware and department stores are 200ml per 5 litres, or 40ml per litre. If unsure, run richer rather than leaner.

Why ride-on belts break

Nearly always overloading. The usual causes are cutting grass that is too thick, lush or wet so it clumps under the deck; running the deck too low; travelling too fast for the grass to clear; or hitting something hidden in long grass. Walk the area first, set the deck height to suit the grass, and cut at a steady pace. In wet or lush months, set the deck higher than usual.

Servicing intervals

At least once a year for most equipment. Fuel and oil additives break down while sitting and leave gum and sludge that blocks lubrication points, causing rapid wear and eventually a ruined engine. Our workshop covers all brands with a three-month guarantee on the work.
