Trimmer or brushcutter?

A line trimmer with a nylon head handles edges, around obstacles and general long grass. A brushcutter takes a metal blade and is what you want for woody growth, scrub and blackberry. Many machines will do both with a head swap — ask us what your model accepts.

Straight or bent shaft

Bent-shaft machines are lighter and easier for edging and general domestic work. Straight-shaft machines give more reach, get further under shrubs and fences, and are the only option if you want to fit a blade. Trimmer heads are shaft-specific, so check which you have before buying a replacement head.

Line

Thicker line lasts longer in tough grass but needs the power to swing it. Round line is general purpose; twisted or square profiles cut more aggressively. Soaking a spool in water for a day before use makes it less brittle and reduces snapping.

Two-stroke fuel

Same rules as the rest of the range: 100ml per 5 litres for a 50:1 oil, 200ml per 5 litres for 25:1. Too little oil is what kills these engines.
