Sizing a ride-on to your block

Match the machine to the area, not the other way around. As a rule of thumb:

• Up to 4,000m² (about an acre): a 110cm (42″) cutting width and a 16–20HP engine.
• 4,000m² to 1 hectare: around 120cm (48″) and 20–24HP.
• Over a hectare: the widest deck you can afford and at least 24HP.

Compare that with a walk-behind at 46–48cm and the time saving is obvious. Cutting widths are usually quoted in inches because the machines are largely designed in the US.

Zero-turn or steering wheel?

Tractor-style ride-ons with a steering wheel are the familiar option and generally cost less. Zero-turns have a rear-mounted engine and lever steering, giving a very tight turning circle — the right answer if you have trees, garden beds or awkward-shaped lawn. They take a little practice. There are also smaller rear-engine riders that are not zero-turn but still turn tightly.

Try before you buy

Sit on it. Is the seat cushioned and supported? Can you reach the controls and pedals without stretching? Is the steering at a comfortable height? Check how easily the catcher or mulch plug comes off, empties and goes back on — you will do it a lot.

Safety and slopes

Ride-ons are heavy, typically 150kg or more, and your weight on top raises the centre of gravity. Do not mow across slopes steeper than about 10 degrees. Commercial zero-turns sit lower and wider and handle more. Look for blades that stop in reverse (or a deliberate override) and a seat cut-out switch.

Transmission

Manual is the budget choice. Hydrostatic/automatic lets you change speed and reverse without shifting, which matters a lot on a big block with obstacles.
